महामारियों के युग में, जैव विविधता और पर्यावरण संरक्षण हमारी सर्वोच्च चिंताओं में से एक बनकर उभरे हैं, जहां अधिकांश लोग इस बात पर एकमत हैं कि पर्यावरण की कमी, विशेष रूप से वन क्षेत्र में कमी के कारण ऐसी तबाही हुई है। हमारे अपने वन क्षेत्रों और जनजातीय आबादी के ऐतिहासिक अतीत से परिचय बेहतर भविष्य की योजना बनाने में मदद करेगा। इस पुस्तक में औपनिवेशिक काल के दौरान पर्यावरण और जनजातियों के ऐतिहासिक विकास को शामिल करने वाले योगदान शामिल हैं। यह एक ऐसा विषय था जो बनारस हिंदू विश्वविद्यालय के इतिहास विभाग, सामाजिक विज्ञान संकाय में आयोजित "भारत का पर्यावरण और जनजातीय इतिहास" नामक तीन दिवसीय राष्ट्रीय सेमिनार में भाग लेने वाले कई शोध विद्वानों और संकाय सदस्यों की चिंताओं पर केंद्रित था। 2-4 अक्टूबर, 2017. इस राष्ट्रीय सेमिनार को भारतीय ऐतिहासिक अनुसंधान परिषद, दिल्ली, बनारस हिंदू विश्वविद्यालय द्वारा वित्त पोषित किया गया था और इतिहास विभाग, बनारस हिंदू विश्वविद्यालय द्वारा आयोजित किया गया था। जनजातीय इतिहास के युवा विद्वानों और शिक्षाविदों के विचारों को प्रस्तुत करने के लिए पत्रों का यह संग्रह प्रकाशित किया जा रहा है। आशा है कि यह खंड एक महत्वपूर्ण कमी को पूरा करेगा और विद्वानों और प्रशासकों के लिए महत्वपूर्ण अध्ययन में योगदान देगा। इस खंड में योगदान देने वालों में विजेंद्र मीना, सुरेश कुमार, सुधा सोनकर, राम कुमार, शशिकेश कुमार गोंड, शिप्रा नंदन, सुदामा सेठी, प्रियंका गुप्ता, ऋषभ कुमार, शेषनाथ शर्मा, विकास सिंह मौर्य, रामायण प्रसाद पटेल, विपुल तिवारी, निर्मला गुप्ता शामिल हैं। सुमन शुक्ला, अजय प्रताप, अजय सिंह मीना और विकास नंदन। यह खंड ऐतिहासिक परिप्रेक्ष्य से जनजातियों के साथ संबंध के संदर्भ में भारतीय पारिस्थितिकी और पर्यावरण का एक दृश्य प्रदान करता है। मध्य प्रदेश, ओडिशा, छत्तीसगढ़, उत्तर प्रदेश, उत्तराखंड, बिहार और झारखंड जैसे राज्यों के लिए ऐतिहासिक चर्चाएँ प्रदान की जाती हैं। यह कार्य स्नातक और स्नातकोत्तर पढ़ने के लिए एक सुलभ शैली में है। विद्वान, शिक्षाविद्, योजनाकार और प्रशासक तथा आम पाठक सभी इसे उपयोगी पाएंगे।

Editors: Prof. Dr. Ajay Pratap is Professor (Head of Department and Organizing Secretary) of History, Faculty of Social Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. He earned his B.A. (Hons.) in History from St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, his M.A. in Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, University of Poona, his M.Phil and PhD in Archaeology from the University of Cambridge, U.K. He teaches at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels in subjects such as Ancient India, Tribal History of India (a course he designed), Research Methodology, Science and Technology in Ancient India, History of Northern and Southern India - AD 600 to 1200, Political Systems of Ancient India, State and Society in Ancient India, State and Economic Life in Ancient India and has authored The Hoe and the Axe: Ethnohistory of Shifting Cultivation in Eastern India, Oxford University Press in 2000 and the Rock Art of the Vindhyas: An Archaeological Survey, Archaeopress, Oxford in 2016. He has supervised several Master, M.Phil and doctoral dissertations on tribal history and Ancient India.

Prof. Dr. Binda Paranjape is a Professor in Ancient Indian History at the Department of History, Faculty of Social Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. She has taught at the graduate and postgraduate levels for 32 years, including teaching and guiding doctoral research at the department and independent research of students from the USA, in their study abroad programs at Varanasi. She has published works related to Ancient Indian linguistics, maritime history, literary and religious traditions, art and aesthetics, notions of ‘time’ in the Buddhist and Brahmanical traditions, and gender issues. She was a Fulbright-Nehru Scholar in 2014 at George Mason University, USA. She has attended international conferences at Queen’s University, Canada, University of Potsdam, Germany, and a summer school on Gender and Peace Building in Post-Genocide Scenario at Kigali, Rwanda. Prof. Dr. Ghan Shyam is a Professor of History at the Department of History, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. He earned his M.A., M Phil and PhD degrees from the Centre of Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, specializing in Southeast Asian History and History of the Indian Diaspora. He has taught courses, among others, on the History of Modern Europe, American History, and the History of the Indian Diaspora. He has been a Fulbright Fellow at New York University twice; in 2005, as a short-term fellow to study US Civilization, and for the academic session 2016-17, as a visiting scholar, to teach and conduct research on the topic “In the Land of Opportunity: A Comparative Study of Indo-Caribbean and Indian Immigrants in New York City since 1965”.
